HYPNOTHERAPY
Hypnosis can be defined as an absorption in inner experience, which, together with appropriate suggestions, can facilitate helpful changes in thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Hypnosis can also facilitate physiological change and has been shown to be effective in treating individuals with a variety of difficulties.
These conditions include; irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), migraine, chronic pain, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxieties, fears and phobias and habit control e.g. weight loss and maintenance, stopping smoking and nail biting.
I am qualified in both counseling (University of Hertfordshire) and Applied Hypnosis (University College London), and apply counseling within hypnosis. This can significantly accelerate the learning process and the ability for individuals to make positive emotional and physical changes.
I presented a paper on 'childbirth with hypnosis' to the BSCAH (British Society for Clinical & Academic Hypnosis) National . I also run courses in Stress Reduction and Enhanced Immune Function with self-hypnosis for groups and individuals.
HYPNOTHERAPY EXPLAINED
There are many misconceptions; there is doubt and even distrust about hypnotherapy. To help you better understand what is involved, let me explain a little bit about what hypnotherapy is and what it is not.
There are many misconceptions about hypnosis; an example of which being the stage shows that appear to show normal intelligent people behaving like chickens! Clearly highly humiliating for the poor participants!
If people on stage act to make others laugh, it's probably because they have a latent desire to do so anyway and such people are probably the life and soul of the party jokesters once a few drinks have suppressed their inhibitions.
However, because hypnosis is such an effective tool for personal development I would like to clear up these misconceptions.
Whilst in a state of hypnosis, you are totally aware of what is being said and what you are doing. A person in a state of hypnosis cannot be made to do anything that conflicts with their beliefs or values.
WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY?
Hypnotherapy comprises two elements
1. Hypnosis
2. Therapy
THE DEFINITION OF HYPNOSIS
A very simple definition could be that hypnosis is an absorption in inner experience, which, along with appropriate suggestions, can facilitate helpful changes in thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Hypnosis can also facilitate physiological change.
All hypnosis is self-hypnosis and no one can be hypnotised against his or her will. There is no magic to achieving success with hypnosis. Almost anyone who chooses too can reach a deep level of relaxation and redirected focus.
In hypnosis the client is not unconscious or asleep. They are in an altered state of awareness. More importantly, the hypnosis is a totally natural state of mind and one we enter involuntarily many times a day. It manifests itself in daydreaming, in that lovely warm relaxed state between sleep and wakefulness at least twice a day (for most people)
How often have you driven a well known route and wondered when you arrived, just how you got there because you can't remember the journey? Answer: your subconscious took over.
There is no special feeling of being 'in hypnosis', just a feeling of deep relaxation just like when you are staring into a fire and realise that you are being called and that you have been called for sometime but you only just realised that it is 'your' name that you could hear…that is the state of hypnosis.
Many people ask "Can I be hypnotised?" or say "I can't be hypnotised", some out of uncertainty, some out of fear or distrust. You may well doubt that you can be hypnotised.
Well, most people can be if they want to be - people can't be hypnotised against their will any more than they can be made to do things they really don't want to do.
The key is that you have to be willing to be hypnotised and agree to it.
THE THERAPY
Therapy can be applied out of hypnosis or indeed in a state of hypnosis and is where the hypnotherapist first establishes the root cause or objective of the client then devises an appropriate course of therapy tailored to the individual. The hypnotherapist induces a state of relaxation whereby the subject allows the therapist to communicate directly with the subject's sub-conscious to experience the therapy. The client will be able to talk during the experience and in fact this would deepen the experience as it increases internal focus.
The suggestions that a therapist may give whilst in hypnosis differ from everyday kinds of instructions, in that a "successful" response experienced by the client and has a quality of involuntariness or effortlessness, e.g.: remembering all that has been revised for an exam on picking up the pen or feeling elated each time the non smoker remembers that he no longer smokes…the feelings of elation are felt automatically as a result of the therapist 'suggestions'
HOW EFFECTIVE IS IT?
Hypnotherapy is acknowledged as a very effective therapy for non-organic problems. The client though has to want to make that changes, because hypnosis cannot make the client do things against their will! I am qualified in both counselling (University of Hertfordshire) and Applied Hypnosis (University College London), and apply counselling and CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) within hypnosis. This can significantly accelerate the learning process and the ability for individuals to make positive emotional and physical changes.
HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL BE REQUIRED?
This depends on the nature of the issue. Simple issues may be resolved in three session, more complex or deep seated issues could take a number of sessions. Stop smoking with hypnosis is a single session with the option of a free follow up.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. Is hypnosis sleep?
A. No it is like daydreaming when you get lost in your thoughts.
Q. Does hypnosis requires immobility?
A. No it doesn't require immobility but often people feel so relaxed that they cannot be bothered to move, however they may get up and leave if they wish!
Q. Is Hypnosis dangerous?
A. Hypnotherapy is only as good as the therapist and the client's commitment and desire to make changes. Check that the hypnotherapist is well qualified, a member of a recognised governing body, is insured and having spoken to them you feel comfortable with them.
Q. Does hypnosis involves being out of control?
A. A person in a state of hypnosis cannot be made to do anything that conflicts with their beliefs or values.
Q. Hypnosis might lead to unwilling disclosure?
A. As with any therapy you are always in a position to choose what to disclose and what not too.
Q. Can people get stuck in hypnosis?
A. No. If you are really enjoying the process you may resist coming back out of hypnosis, or you may just go to sleep during the session. In any event, you will come out naturally just as you would wake up or come out of a daydream. However the skill of the hypnotherapist is to ensure that you don't sleep, as therapy is not easy with a slumbering client!
Q. Is hypnosis abnormal?
A. We all go in and out of hypnosis throughout the day as in daydreaming
Q. Is hypnosis a treatment in itself?
A. No Hypnosis is a state. It is what is done during hypnosis that is the 'effective' bit. The therapy whilst in a hypnotic state is what makes the changes.

HYPNOBIRTHING
HypnoBirthing teaches you, along with your birth companion, the art and joy of experiencing birth in a more comfortable manner. You will learn how to call upon your own body's natural analgesia (pain relief) and thus reduce or even eliminate discomfort and the need for medication.
When a woman is properly prepared for childbirth, nature is free to function in the same well-designed manner that it does with all other creatures.
You will be fascinated as you view HypnoBirthing films showing labouring mothers, awake, alert and in good humour as they experience the kind of gentle birth that you too can know when you are free of the
Fear - Tension - Pain Syndrome.
HypnoBirthing teaches you to release all prior programming about birth, how to trust your body and work with it, as well as how to free yourself of negative emotions that lead to pain causing fear and unyielding muscles.
HypnoBirthing will teach you the art of using your own natural birthing instincts. You will not be in a trance or a sleep state. You will be aware and fully in control but profoundly relaxed.
The HypnoBirthing childbirth method is as much a philosophy of birth as it is a technique for achieving a satisfying, safe, relaxing and stress free method of birthing.
YOU WILL LEARN
* Everything you need to know to achieve a safer, easier and more comfortable birth.
* To explode the myth that pain is a necessary accompaniment to labour.
* Techniques of deep relaxation to help you eliminate the
Fear - Tension - Pain Syndrome.
* How your body is naturally designed to conceive, nurture and birth your baby with ease and comfort.
* Natural ways to bring your body into labour without artificial chemical inductions.
* How you and your birthing companion can create a birthing environment that is calm, serene and joyful rather than tense and stressful.
* Gentle birthing techniques that allow you to breathe your baby into the world without the violence of hard physical pushing.
* To use your natural birthing instincts to birth your baby in a way that most mirrors the way nature intended.
